Mackenzie’s compelling artworks convey the polarity of life’s experiences celebrating its pure joy, while also providing a deep exploration of its sacrifices and struggles. Mackenzie was raised in the industrial English town of Middlesbrough in the 1950s, where his father worked as a labourer and his mother as an auxiliary nurse.
He remembers the strong feeling of community spirit, the warmth and humour that flourished in the face of adversity, as well as the loneliness and isolation. Struggling with dyslexia throughout his childhood, Mackenzie found confidence in painting and drawing. He left school without formal qualifications but eventually got the courage to enter the local art college. His lack of education and a barely readable application did nothing to warrant support, but the strength and volume of work that
Mackenzie presented, coupled with his enthusiasm and commitment, won him a place at the Middlesbrough College of Art and, subsequently, the Byam Shaw School of Art in London.
Mackenzie is now one of today’s most collected and sought-after artists. His works are a tribute to the creativity within us all and are a vivid expression of hope and the human spirit.
Unveiled for the first time in Kansas City in October 2006, the monumental sculpture tour then traveled to Christchurch to support the launch of the Dyslexia Discovery Exhibit in Worcester Blvd. Whether in Queenstown or their next destination in Australia they succeed in spreading Mackenzie’s message of hope.
